TAKEAWAYS

- I’ve had just as much fun playing solo on the TV, as I have setting it up in tabletop mode at the pub and playing with joy cons in split screen. The versatility of the Switch hardware, coupled with the simplicity of Fast RMX’s ‘it just works’ design philosophy, is a match made in heaven.

- Hero mode is a superb addition, designed for the hardcore racing fan. Boost and Shield energy is combined into a single, all encompassing health bar, which makes every turn, trackside impact, and critical overtake a matter of life and death. Oh, and you have to come first in every race. Brutal!

- From a purely performance standpoint, Fast RMX delivers the goods. The framerate is rock solid, and the varied track locales offer a diverse array of visuals. Again, the perfect game to show off to friends, and proof that despite pre release rumblings, the Switch is no slouch in the graphics department.

- Support for handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, split screen, LAN, and online multiplayer, as well as joy cons AND the Pro controller is very pleasing indeed. The joy con grip is the least comfortable control option, but everything else works great.

- The lack of private multiplayer matches with friends / a party system for matchmaking at launch is a bit disappointing, but Shin’en Multimedia have already announced that the first major update to the game will include a ‘Time Attack’ mode and ‘Friend Online Support’, which is fantastic news.

Whenever a new console makes its debut, finding the right game to show off to your friends is a daunting, but important, task. The visuals have to grab their attention, the premise be simple enough to explain, and ultimately, it has to be something you can share together. Fast RMX, a repackaged, tricked out re-release of Wii U’s monster hit Fast Racing Neo, has the sort of boundless energy and confident mechanics that absolutely deserve a place in your shiny new Switch library.

As a love letter to F-Zero, with subtle nods to the sleek vehicular design of Wipeout (and maybe just a dash of Extreme-G), Fast RMX is a wonderful hybrid racer that feels instantly familiar. However, it’s not without new ideas. Mid race colour switching is neat, and will either enhance or hinder your progress by offering a speed boost or temporarily slow you down. It works by driving over blue or yellow strips on the track that respond to the colour you have selected, which forces you to consider your surroundings and react accordingly.

There are number of nice touches: the appropriately exuberant announcer, spinning out other players by boosting into them, and track elements (like extreme weather, wandering mechs, spinning fans) that keep each race lively and unpredictable. Here are some additional thoughts from our time with the final release.

Fast RMX is every bit as gorgeous in motion as it appears in screenshots. A fantastic technical achievement, and frankly incredible that this is technically a handheld game!

JTGA

TAKEAWAYS KEY

- Something marked with the JTGA
Green badge is an extremely positive
and / or unexpected response to a
particular game or moment.

- The JTGA Orange badge represents
a mixed response. It’s normally
something that works in principle,
but could have been executed better.

- When you see the JTGA Red badge,
you know this is something negative
that’s either disappointing, frustrating,
rage inducing, or all of the above.

CONCLUSION

Fast RMX is a confident, immensely fun arcade racer and a perfect showcase of the Switch. Don’t let this pass you by. It doesn’t deserve to be relegated to your backlog. Developer Shin’en Multimedia have done excellent work here, bundled in support for just about every play style imaginable, and demonstrated a commitment to supporting the game going forward.
