LASER LEAGUE
The next great eSport.

REVIEW
By JAY TEE
15/05/18

Simplicity is an underrated noun, and Roll7’s uncomplicated, clean approach to game design makes Laser League a modern classic. Two button controls, strong visuals, and a premise that defines ‘easy to learn, but tough to master’. Comparisons with Rocket League are inevitable; the name, graphics, emphasis on team work… but this is no carbon copy.

Two teams face off in a top down arena. Various nodes spawn which can be transformed into deadly, one hit kill lasers. Dodging these is the aim of the game, and a total wipeout will cost you the round. On top of that, you have to contend with unique abilities, power ups, Snake 2 style wall teleportation, and last minute revivals.

Laser League is all about reflexes and good timing, with a dash of luck. Thankfully, each class appears to have a counter. Every tactic a weakness. A future as a competitive e-sport is all but assured.

THE BASICS - Top down competitive action game, where two teams fight for control of an arena filled with deadly lasers.

PLATFORMS - PS4, Xbox One, and PC

PLAYERS - Offline - 4, Online - 6

CO-OP? MULTIPLAYER? - Shared screen and online. A.I. players can be added to fill empty player slots.

DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT - None currently announced.

TARPS? - At the bottom of all our reviews, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.

REVIEWS KEY:

The Look - Art style, graphics, and overall presentation.

The Feel - Mechanics, controls, and learning curve.

The Sound - Music, sound effects, and dialogue.

The Experience - Anecdotes and random thoughts.

Barging unsuspecting folks with the ‘Smash’ class never gets old.

The BLEEDING EYES badge is for a game where bump mapping doesn’t happen as often as you might think…

BORG PERFECTION - The futuristic, neon character models resemble a cel shaded Tron. Crowd design and other background effects are serviceable, but that’s OK. The key here is the gameplay is easy to follow, so you can’t blame a visual element for distracting you from the action.

MRS. BUTTERSWORTH - Framerate and overall performance is silky smooth, which is an absolute necessity for a fast paced, competitive experience like Laser League. Load times are good, menu transitions are slick, and there’s an overall feeling of polish that often gets forgotten when a game spends forever in Early Access.

HASHTAG SAD FACE - Emote’s are fine, but you’ll be so busy concentrating on the match they may go unused.

Laser League is a breath of fresh air. An appropriately priced, highly addictive, thoughtfully made competitive game that we simply can’t stop playing.

TUG O’ WAR - There’s a push and pull to the gameplay mechanics that feels balanced and rewarding. Every class has an obvious counter, with the lethal ‘Blade’ counteracted by ‘Shock’s’ stun move, which in turn can be dodged entirely by the ‘Ghost’s’ default loadout. Nice touch: if you’re on the losing side, you can change classes mid round to counteract your opponents.

EVEN CLETUS GETS IT - I absolutely adore the control scheme, which is effectively a two input set up. The left stick moves your character, with stuff like activating powerups, reviving team mates, and stealing a laser node all handled by simply walking into each respective element. Your class specific ability is then mapped to any of the four ‘trigger’ buttons.

CONFIDENCE IS KING - Despite initially being trampled online, I quickly got to grips with the flow and pace of each match.

THUD CITY - You can expect the soundtrack to be filled with drum and bass, techno heavy tracks that perfectly compliment the visual style. It’s fitting that, much like the graphics, nothing distracts you or puts you off. It’s perfectly in keeping with the futuristic tone and setting of the game.

BLEEP BLOOP SLICE - Some of the classes have very satisfying sound effects to go alongside their primary moves. ‘Smash’, for example, has a cracking thud that provides great feedback when you nail another player. There are a lot of nice touches like this spread throughout the game.

HALO ANNOUNCER - The arrival of a newly spawned powerup is always accompanied by a bass laden voice over. Very cool.

RAZOR SHARP - A lot of effort has gone into the presentation and UI. Navigating menus, inviting folks to your party, and generally finding your way around is very intuitive. This sort of thing often gets overlooked, but Roll7 have clearly gone to great lengths to ensure it works.

PACKAGE DEAL - You get a great selection of maps, with obvious room for expansion. Infact, the whole package feels incredibly generous for its price point. I’m hoping that we’ll see greater customisation options, private matches, and perhaps some new game modes released down the line.

CHUFFED PUMPERS - There aren’t many games that can turn blind panic into satisfying relief in a matter of seconds…
