MOOD SWINGS #1

MOOD SWINGS?

Besides being the obvious side effect to a hormonal outburst, “Mood Swings” is a weekly editorial crafted by our editor Jay Tee. It’s like a series of extended tweets; 60 to a 100 words each, ranting or raving about something terrible / great that’s happened to us that week in our gaming lives. It serves as a weekly collection of random musings designed to provide a snapshot of what we’re doing, things you should be excited for, and stuff to avoid as you navigate the choppy waters of this wonderfully unpredictable hobby.

Anything, from reactions to a new game announcement, surprising breaking news, to our cat just nibbled our thumb sticks, can be found here. It’s partnered alongside our brand new YouTube series “Keepsake”, a JTGA community collection of classic gaming moments. You can check out the latest episode here.

Each “Mood Swing” will be tagged with either a green, yellow, or red Tarp badge. This represents a visual indicator of our reaction.

JTGA

TAKEAWAYS KEY

- Something marked with the JTGA
Green badge is an extremely positive
and / or unexpected response to a
particular game or moment.

- The JTGA Orange badge represents
a mixed response. It’s normally
something that works in principle,
but could have been executed better.

- When you see the JTGA Red badge,
you know this is something negative
that’s either disappointing, frustrating,
rage inducing, or all of the above.

LOADING TO VICTORY - I’ve spent well over three hours trying to install Dead Rising 3 to my Xbox One. After several inexplicable errors caused the process to freeze, I’ve had to delete and restart multiple times. I haven’t even started downloading the 21GB’s worth of patches. I long for the simplicity of cartridges. Puff air into the bottom and your problems go away. For some reason.

I know I’m late to the party here, since this was a launch title. But I didn’t realise the graphics were this murky. Maybe I’m just grumpy because I STILL HAVEN’T PLAYED IT YET.

OLD IS NEW - Backwards compatibility is wonderful. Nintendo seem to nail it (more or less), but Microsoft have really come out swinging this gen. Rediscovering Gears of War 3 has been a real highlight this week. Good ol’ CliffyB’s magnum opus has aged beautifully. And the integration with XB1
features (like Game DVR and Cloud Saves) is very slick and works great.

This thing runs beautifully on Xbox One. With my profile preserved and everything. I even  paid £6 for an old map pack just so I wouldn’t be left out of the cool kids dedicated server party. Well done Microsoft.

FOR BITTER OR WORSE - You’ll quickly find yourself sinking into a smaller and smaller box if you pipe up and moan about the nature of free games. It’s objectively a selfish position, but here’s the problem: Games with Gold is killing it. April’s PS Plus offering of Zombi (an ill advised Wii U port) has highlighted a dramatic lapse in quality in recent months. Meanwhile, SUNSET OVERDRIVE!

I haven’t even played it yet! But I’m so excited. Insomniac have some of the most unashamedly wacky and creative folk driving their games. This is a smashing offer.

PASTURES NEW - So I made a website! JTGA is officially a thing. We’ve had some early success (Housemarque and Dreadbit Games re tweeted me!), but we’re just getting started. A definite shout out to the simplicity and ease of the PS4 share button. Coupled with USB support, editing together our first ever piece of video content was really smooth and simple. Thank you Sony!

Although I’ll always mourn the loss of the traditional start and select buttons, the brilliance of this integration cannot be praised enough.

DARK ZONE PLUS - Speaking of which, I had an absolute cracker of a battle in
DZ03 last week that served as the foundation for our brand new YouTube series “Keepsake”. I couldn't help but be awestruck by the sight of a seemingly simple extraction unravelling into a cover darting battle of wits. As you’ll see below, I managed to sneak in one or two rogue takedowns before all was said and done.

STATE OF PLAY - The buggy state of the 1.1 Incursion update for The Division last week, alongside the recent and surprising closure of Evolution Studios following Drive Club's disastrous launch, has left me feeling deflated. Although I’m sure Ubisoft are patching things as we speak, and DriveClub certainly turned things around, these launch woes are far too commonplace and leave a bad taste.

Although I love this game, the state it launched in was inexcusable. Battlefield 4. Sim City. Even VR hardware launches like Oculus and HTC Vive have all been dogged by critical issues that should never have happened.
