MOOD SWINGS #12
Real time ray tracing feels redundant.

MOOD SWINGS

MOOD SWINGS?

Besides being the obvious side effect to a hormonal outburst, ‘Mood Swings’ is an editorial crafted by our editor Jay Tee, alongside contributions from the JTGA team. It’s like a series of extended tweets, ranting or raving about something terrible / great that has happened in the world of gaming.

It’s a collection of random musings designed to provide a snapshot of what we’re doing, things you should be excited for, and stuff to avoid as you navigate the choppy waters of this wonderfully unpredictable hobby.

Anything, from reactions to a new game announcement, surprising breaking news, to our cat just nibbled our thumb sticks, can be found here. Each “Mood Swing” will be tagged with either a green, yellow, or red Tarp badge. This represents a visual indicator of our reaction.

MAKING IT RAIN - What a fantastic day for cool announcements. Nintendo’s indie focused direct (which is often more consistently strong than their core presentations) revealed that Windjammers is getting a Switch port… only for that to be immediately gazumped by the reveal of a sequel, with hand drawn graphics?! Yes please. Both titles are perfect for local multiplayer shenanigans. Plus, I’m a sucker for a shadow drop, and the quirky Morphies Law, intense Prison Architect, and strategy title Bad North hit the spot. - JAY TEE

The reveal trailer reminded me of the Pokémon cartoon. And a lot of anime. I can’t wait for this.

SCEPTICAL FACE - My feelings about today’s announcement of Battlefield V’s (SUCH a stupid name) open beta are a muddled cocktail of cautious optimism and eye rolls. I so desperately want this game to be good. I need them to address the ‘spawn, run for two minutes, die’ loop. I want consistent destruction that tops Bad Company. I hope that the excessive choke point map design, and unbalanced special weapon pickups, have both been eliminated. An open beta is a smart play, and it’ll be great to go hands on, but so far, I’m unconvinced. - JAY TEE

WRONG WAY TO GO - There was a press release today for nVidia’s new ray tracing tech. It automatically renders realistic lighting in real time. It’s being treated like a revolutionary, medium defining achievement. And I cannot help but laugh. So much hype, so much hubris, and for what? A thing that makes the lights go pretty. I’d much rather they refocus their efforts to making Geo Mod style destruction tech an industry standard. Or facial expressions that don’t look like Mass Effect: Andromeda. C’mon nVidia! We believe in you! - JAY TEE

WINDJAMMERS 2 (PC, NS)

People who get in planes and don’t play the objective are the people I don’t like. There. I said it.

BATTLEFIELD V (PS4, XB1, PC)

When you’re murdering nameless goons with an axe, take a minute to appreciate that ray tracing. *SIGH*

SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER (PS4, XB1, PC)
