JTGA

TAKEAWAYS KEY

- Something marked with the JTGA
Green badge is an extremely positive
and / or unexpected response to a
particular game or moment.

- The JTGA Orange badge represents
a mixed response. It’s normally
something that works in principle,
but could have been executed better.

- When you see the JTGA Red badge,
you know this is something negative
that’s either disappointing, frustrating,
rage inducing, or all of the above.

CONCLUSION

Mafia 3: ‘Stones Unturned’ is exactly what we want to see from further Lincoln Clay adventures. The emphasis on new story content, and expanded combat mechanics, is a smart move by Hanger 13; these were always the better aspects of the original game. JTGA will have a full review, when ‘Stones Unturned’ releases digitally on May 30th 2017.

TAKEAWAYS

- Much like Roxy from ‘Faster, Baby!’, Donovan acts both as a supporting ally and foil for Lincoln. A new sniper service, revealed in the announcement trailer, allows you to mark groups of enemies within a radial zone, in a similar way to throwing a grenade. When you release the button, targets within that area of effect get popped by Donovan from a distance. However, he’s not super human, and won’t automatically clear out every hostile within the marked area. This does create a more active role for your A.I. buddy, and represents another point of difference from the original game’s combat. Hanger 13 have also promised that Donovan and Lincoln’s heated interactions will be present throughout most combat encounters.

- Connor Aldrich is the main antagonist, a super sketchy mercenary who goes way back to Donovan’s days fighting in Vietnam. His arrival in New Bordeaux is the jumping off point for this new adventure. Details of his motivations are thin on the ground, but he has a small private army, which in turns opens up access to some fancy new toys.

- An RPG has been confirmed, along with a dart gun for silent, longer range takedowns. An off road truck with a mounted gun will also be appearing, and since Hanger 13 is aiming for a ‘buddy action movie’ feel, these additions make a lot of sense. I’m hoping for some bigger vehicle set pieces, building off the back of what we saw in ‘Faster, Baby!’. It’ll be interesting to see if the slow mo mechanic added in that first piece of DLC makes the jump to ‘Stones Unturned’; it afforded a fantastic new level of control during some of the more hectic vehicle sequences.

- One of the best parts about the first expansion was exploring previously unseen areas that offer something not found in the original game. Sinclair Parish from ‘Faster, Baby!’, with its billboard smashing jumps and open farm land, lent itself well to the focus on car combat. Here, ‘Stones Unturned’ features a base of operations set on a tropical island, complete with beach landing!

Following your uprising against Sheriff Beaumont and his white supremacist thugs in ‘Faster, Baby!’, Mafia 3 returns later this month with its second narrative expansion: ‘Stones Unturned’. Hanger 13 continues to double down on producing fresh story content with a second, brand new playable area, and the return of Donovan, your acerbic CIA handler and critical ally from the Marcano saga.

As your new companion, he makes perfect sense. The back and forth between Donovan and player character Lincoln was a high point of the base game. Freeing him up from the confines of his motel and propelling him front and centre into the action opens up a world of opportunity for witty dialogue and gameplay mechanics. We’ve broken down the key information released following its unveiling, along with some hopes for the final release.
