TAKEAWAYS

- The game has an unusual setting, taking place during the 1950’s in an alternate version of the Scandinavian countryside. Otto can hunt and kill wildlife to replenish health, as well as forge newer, upgraded spears and other weapons from material he finds in the world. This element of harvesting parts of the environment to enhance your combat effectiveness is a nice touch.

- There are opportunities for stealth gameplay as Otto, with different takedown animations depending on whether you’re in full combat or catching an enemy off guard. Uncharted style handholds offer verticality, as well as the option to mount Troll for some true co-op action.

- Troll is able to pick up boulders to attack enemies (which is giving me Left 4 Dead ‘Tank’ vibes), as well as roar to scare foes and navigate sheer cliffs with Otto on his back. Based on what they’ve shown so far, this game is going to come into its own when playing with a friend. That Switch version: yes please!

- It has been confirmed that the entire game is playable in co-op, and won’t be pulling any Dying Light ‘the ending is single player only’ surprises. Although online co-op would have been a nice option, I’m glad the developers are supporting same screen play.

- One thing I really like is the character animation. It might not be the most graphically stunning game ever made, but Troll himself is a charmingly odd looking beast, with excellent facial design and lumbering movement. Otto seems like a little more of a blank slate, but the game features voice over and a fair amount of narrative context, so we’ll have to see how this gets developed.

Although big budget releases have a tendency to leave split screen support on the cutting room floor, the ease of access to modern indie titles has given couch co-op gamers plenty of reasons to rejoice. Troll and I, the upcoming third person action adventure from Spiral House and Maximum Games, is built from the ground up to support same screen play. And with the recent announcement of a port for Nintendo Switch arriving later this year, this could be the one to ignite the flames of nostalgia and bring good old fashioned gaming with friends back to its roots.

However, Troll and I is also entirely playable in single player, offering seamless switching between Otto (the stealthier of the two characters seen in the screenshot below) and Troll (an appropriately named brute with a heavier focus on combat). Beyond support for co-op, the game offers crafting, exploration, multiple enemy types, and traversal puzzles in a pleasing mixture of genres.

We’ve broken down the key information released following its announcement, along with some hopes for the final release. Troll and I is due for release on March 21st 2017 in North America, and March 24th 2017 here in the UK, with a Switch version following later in Spring 2017.

The relationship between the two characters seems really well thought out, and should offer some nice asymmetric gameplay opportunities as you travel the environment and solve puzzles.

JTGA

TAKEAWAYS KEY

- Something marked with the JTGA
Green badge is an extremely positive
and / or unexpected response to a
particular game or moment.

- The JTGA Orange badge represents
a mixed response. It’s normally
something that works in principle,
but could have been executed better.

- When you see the JTGA Red badge,
you know this is something negative
that’s either disappointing, frustrating,
rage inducing, or all of the above.

CONCLUSION

For anyone keen on showing off their Nintendo Switch to friends after launch, Troll and I is looking set to be a reliable pick. Support for other platforms is welcome, but the idea of being able to hand a Joy Con off to a buddy is too good to pass up. We’ll have more coverage of Troll and I leading up to its release in March (and for Switch in Spring 2017).
